Asif: Tell us about your work and your current ventures?
Robert: I’m the founder and CEO of Acceleration Partners – an industry-leading global performance marketing agency that helps preeminent brands, including Adidas, Reebok, Target, Warby Parker and others, establish and grow transparent, brand-aligned, performance-driven affiliate programs.
Acceleration Partners mission is to drive the digital marketing industry to be performance-based and to change the work-life paradigm. Our culture emphasizes core values, respectful authenticity, capacity-building, and transparency. We foster work-life integration and encourage our team members to be successful in both their professional and personal lives. Acceleration Partners was honored as one of Glassdoor’s Best Places to Work in 2018, ranking #4 in the SMB category. And Forbes recently named us a Small Giant, one of America’s 25 Best Small Companies.
I wrote a book –Performance Partnerships: The Checkered Past, Shifting Present, and Exciting Future of Affiliate Marketing– published May 2017. It became a global bestseller in global and direct marketing and a highly recommended read by Entrepreneur, Forbes, and Huffington Post.
I also created the inspirational weekly newsletter, Friday Forward, which started out as a motivational email I sent to my employees every Friday. Today, Friday Forwards are received and shared by 35,000+ people from over fifty countries across six continents. I’ve built the Acceleration Partners brand around the concepts of empowering messages, positive culture, leadership and personal growth.
Asif: How did you get started in Affiliate Marketing?
Robert: I started out as an affiliate earning money online with my affiliate site featuring product reviews. I experienced first-hand the problems within the industry and the frustrations many high-quality content publishers had with the way incentives were aligned in affiliate programs. I also realized that many brands misunderstood the value of their affiliate program and how much revenue it could generate for their business.
I took this inside knowledge of the industry and my experience as a consultant and venture capitalist and founded Acceleration Partners in 2007. One of my goals was to make sure brands received the level of service required to make their affiliate programs successful. Many were letting their programs run themselves or relying on network management with no incentives to focus on profitability or ROI. We worked closely with our brand clients to integrate their affiliate programs into a larger marketing strategy and think of their programs as a form of brand licensing.
We’ve seen a seismic shift in how brands are approaching affiliate marketing and we’ve lead the way in their recognition of the growing importance of Performance Partnerships. Brands are increasingly taking direct control over their performance marketing programs to ensure brand alignment. They are expanding their affiliate programs to include influencers and business development-type relationships. Our focus on Performance Partnerships and efforts to educate brands on how they can standardize their partner relationships and manage them at scale will change the future of the industry.
Asif: What books have influenced your thoughts the most?
Robert: One of my favorite books is Mistakes Were Made By Not By Me, which is about cognitive dissonance, a powerful force that affects a lot of our decision making. I was also heavily influenced by Daniel Pink’s Drive and Tim Ferriss’ The Four Hour Work Week.
Asif: What advice would you give to startups when starting their journey in Affiliate Marketing?
Robert: The biggest advice I would give to any company is that if you are going to do it, do it right. Either hire someone with experience or partner with a company that has the experience you need. Most affiliate programs don’t do well because they don’t have the talent or focus that they need. The days of having someone run an affiliate program along with four other channels and without any prior experience are long gone.
Asif: What are your views about MarkTechPost?
