This AI Research from Apple Combines Regional Variants of English to Build a ‘World English’ Neural Network Language Model for On-Device Virtual Assistants

In technological advancement, developing Neural Network Language Models (NNLMs) for on-device Virtual Assistants (VAs) represents a significant leap forward. Traditionally, these models have been tailored to specific languages, regions, and even devices, posing considerable challenges in terms of scalability and maintenance. 

Researchers from AppTek GmbH and Apple tackle these issues by pioneering a “World English” NNLM that amalgamates various dialects of English into a single, cohesive model. This groundbreaking approach seeks to enhance the efficiency of virtual assistants and expand their accessibility and utility across a broader range of users.

Central to the problem lies the cumbersome necessity of developing and maintaining multiple dialect-specific models for VAs. This situation substantially increases the effort required to scale and update these systems, especially when introducing new features that must be compatible across different languages and device platforms. The solution proposed by the research team addresses these challenges by consolidating models for various dialects of English, American, British, and Indian into one versatile NNLM. This strategy simplifies the development process and significantly reduces the environmental impact of training multiple models.

A pivotal aspect of this research is the exploration of adapter modules as a means to improve the modeling of dialect-specific characteristics within language models. These modules offer a more efficient alternative to traditional approaches, requiring fewer parameters to capture the nuances of different dialects. The study delves into adapter bottlenecks within existing Fixed-size Ordinally-Forgetting Encoding (FOFE)-based architectures, demonstrating their efficacy in enhancing dialect representation without necessitating the specialization of entire sub-networks. This approach represents a notable advancement in the field, facilitating the creation of more adaptable and resource-efficient NNLMs.

The experimental setup employed by the researchers is comprehensive, involving training the proposed model on a vast dataset encompassing three major English dialects. The analysis highlights the model’s capacity to efficiently process and understand a wide range of vernacular variations, achieving this with a remarkable balance of accuracy, latency, and memory usage. For instance, the proposed architecture showcases an average improvement of 1.63% in accuracy over single-dialect baselines on head-heavy test sets and a 3.72% improvement on tail entities across dialects. These figures underscore the model’s superior performance, particularly in understanding and processing diverse dialects of English.

A deeper examination of the model’s architecture reveals its innovative design, which incorporates adapter modules to optimize the representation of dialect-specific traits. This design choice enhances the model’s linguistic versatility and ensures compatibility with the stringent memory and latency requirements of on-device VAs. The study’s findings illustrate the potential of this approach to significantly reduce the model size and improve inference speed, thereby paving the way for more efficient and effective deployment of virtual assistants across many devices.
