A vast amount of video is being generated in the field of surgery, notably through camera probes used in minimally invasive operations so that surgeons may monitor their actions in real-time. If these videos could be analyzed, compared to similar surgeries, and matched up against results, they may be a priceless resource for doctors. However, given that there is an excessive amount of data, that task is really challenging.
Theator, a Palo Alto, California-based Healthtech startup, is solving this challenge by digging through the vast amount of surgical video data and transforming it into valuable insights. Theator extracts and annotates each crucial moment from real-world procedures using AI and computer vision so that surgeons can acquire a profound scientific understanding of their performances and colleagues worldwide.
Over 30K hours of surgical footage and data, with approximately a billion analyzed frames, can be found in Theator’s library. Theator blends surgical video footage with outcomes data through automated EHR connectivity to produce fresh insights that can enhance treatment, streamline procedures, and lower outcome variation.
Theator’s goal is to create a whole new experience of AI in surgery. They are creating breakthrough AI capabilities with real-world scientific data to enable more consistently successful surgeries and, ultimately, a healthier world.
The “Surgical Intelligence” startup has raised $24M in additional Series A funding. The funding represents a sizable increase over Theator’s Series A funding of $15.5 million from February 2021, bringing the round’s total funding to $39.5 million and the company’s total funding to $42.5 million.
Theator plans to utilize the funding to expand commercially and quicken the adoption of its surgical intelligence platform throughout North American healthcare organizations.
