Movie Theater Tech Keeps Crowds Coming Back

As streaming services grow in popularity, you might think people would be less likely to go to the movie theater, but the young adults that use these services are also the most likely to frequent theaters. On top of that, frequent moviegoers are actually more likely to own technology – nearly 80% own at least 4 different devices.

Technology may be improving our access to movies for home viewing, but it’s still more cost-effective for a family of 4 to go to the movies every month for a year than to install their own professional-quality home theater. There may be fewer theaters today than 20 years ago, but the number of screens is increasing, and more theaters are switching to digital projection and more immersive theater technology.

Since 2013, the number of digital screens in theaters has gone up 10%, and digital 3D is growing as nearly the same rate. With Dolby Vision technology, those digital screens are even brighter and can display a greater spectrum of color with million-to-one contrast ratio. But innovation isn’t limited to the screen; Dolby’s latest surround sound technology lets sound travel seamlessly throughout the theater.
